What we collect, which isn’t much.

Things you send us

When you submit a question, response, listing, correction or advertising enquiry, we store what you typed along with your name and email if you gave them. We use them to review the submission and to follow up. We do not sell them, rent them, or hand them to advertisers.

Voting

To stop one person voting fifty times, each vote is stored with a one-way hash of your IP address and browser user-agent combined with a private key. The hash cannot be turned back into an IP address, it is only ever compared against other hashes for the same poll, and it is not linked to anything else you do on the site. A cookie also records which option you picked so the page can show you your own answer.

Cookies

Three, at most: one recording your vote on a given topic, one holding the preview code while the site is in development, and one your browser may set for the "saved articles" list. That one stays in your browser and is never sent to us.

Analytics

Aggregate request logs from our hosting provider. No third-party analytics, no advertising pixels, no cross-site tracking.

Getting your data removed

Email us via the contact page and say what you sent and roughly when. We’ll delete it.
