Somebody in a hostel in Lisbon asks where you are from. You live in Whitby. What comes out of your mouth?
It is a small question with a large tell in it. A region of six and a half million people has one internationally legible name, and most of the people who use it do not live inside the city limits. Some of them resent that. Some of them have never thought about it. A few, mostly in Burlington and Oshawa, will tell you they are from somewhere else entirely and mean it.
There is no correct answer, which is why it is worth asking. What the region calls itself when nobody here is listening is the closest thing to an honest map of it.
