The Question

Which highway is the worst?

Not the busiest, the worst. The one that ruins the day. The 401 has the numbers. The DVP has the lanes. The 400 has the cottage traffic. The QEW has the Skyway and the 427 has the airport.

Why we’re asking

This region commutes further and slower than almost anywhere on the continent, and each of its highways has a specific way of being terrible that its regulars can describe in detail.

The 401 through Toronto is the busiest road in North America and the reason the Premier wants a tunnel under it. The Don Valley Parkway is a two-lane road pretending to be an expressway, and the Gardiner beside it is under reconstruction until at least 2030. The 400 is fine until Friday afternoon, when the entire region attempts to leave on it. The QEW has the Skyway, the Burlington bend and the Ford plant; the 427 has the airport and every truck in Peel.

Name the worst. Not the one with the highest count, but the one that has cost you the most of your life.

Sources: none needed. Everyone has driven all of them.
