Forty-five storeys beside Unionville GO. Markham's next Main Street?

Unionville’s Main Street is the reason people who have never been to Markham think they know what it looks like. Unionville GO, a kilometre south, is about to be the reason they are wrong.

Metropia’s UnionCity is going up beside the station, three Arcadis-designed towers of 36, 40 and 44 storeys and 1,360 homes, and in January the developer filed revised plans for the next phase, six towers from 41 to 45 storeys, having trimmed the tallest. Across the city in March, council approved Remington’s five towers from 15 to 41 storeys and 2,139 units at Verdale Crossing and Birchmount, beside Downtown Markham. Residents who came to those meetings talked about crowded schools, parks, traffic, transit capacity, the pressure on Markham Stouffville Hospital, and community centres and libraries that do not yet exist.

Markham has spent twenty years being the 905 municipality that planned its growth carefully. This is where it finds out whether that reputation survives the towers.
